“ETC” stands for Evacuated Tube Collector. Essentially, these systems use glass tubes (each a double-wall vacuum) that absorb solar radiation and heat up the fluid inside (or a heat pipe), which then transfers to a storage tank (or directly heats water).
The vacuum inside the tube provides very good insulation, reducing heat losses.
